Universal m-18 with no oil filter?

I have an older model m-18 universal diesel. The manual shows an oil filter located (when viewing from the belt side, front of the engine) behind the belt to the right. I do not see an oil filter there. The previous owner said there is no oil filter on this model. Is that possible?!

i had the same engine and it very much has an oil filter right where you described it. I would check with a mirror to see if someone sealed off the post where the filter is screwed on.

no oil filter

Why would someone seal it off? I have stuck my hand back in there and do not "feel" anything like an oil filter element. In the pictures it is rather prominent, so I cannot believe it is hiding from me....
I have run the engine without problem (so far) for hours.

Checking with local agent

Good advice, that. I am checking with the agent here in Seattle. He seems to think it might have had a remote oil filter installed, though I cannot for the life of me see it.
I need the book, "Oil Filters for Dummies"!
