Volvo Penta 2020 Starting Trouble

Hello all,

I have a Volvo MD2020 inboard diesel and am having trouble. The engine was new in 2005, has had regular use and maintenance. The engine has always started up immediately, without any trouble. Today the engine would not start. I go through my starting sequence, including 10-15 seconds of glow plugs, and it turns over normally but will not fire and run. The only thing that I have done since the last time the engine was started was add 5 gallons of fuel.

This is the troubleshooting I have done.
-Engine stop in
-Re-bled fuel line, making sure that fuel was getting to the injectors.
-Checked fuel filter
- Checked air filter

The engine is getting fuel and air, and the compression sounds good. A couple of weeks ago I tried starting the engine with the engine stop pulled, and this is exactly what the engine sounds like now. After my trouble-shooting it seems like there something that is keeping the engine from firing, but after inspecting the engine stop I can find nothing that would cause that. Is it possible there is a blown fuse, or something else going on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matthew

Matthew, if it were a blown fuse, the engine simply wouldn't crank.

You've not mentioned anything about glow plugs. How long do you leave the glow on for before you try to start the engine??

Sorry,

I let the glow plugs heat for 10-15 seconds. I will edit my original post to add that. I would like to believe it was the glow plugs, but they seem to be working and I have not altered my starting sequence.

Thanks for the reply Hartley

Unlike many other makes, for some reason the Volvo MD2000 range really need glow to get going. If you're having trouble starting, 10-15 secs is a bit light on.. try 30 secs instead.

My guess is that your glow plugs are not getting enough power. Check that the control panel negative connection is not corroded:

Something worth checking, anyways.
