sorry to hijack the thread...but this is from *MY* thread on the transmission dipstick. Apparently, I forgot that the metal tube comes out and leaves this behind:

will need to get to my dremel this weekend.

Thanks everyone. Lots of good advice here.
Gave me an idea of using my dividers....stick the points in on opposite sides and turn the divider. Hope to try it next weekend when we go back to the boat.

Any hardware store will have bolt extractors, they are a spiral tapered bit of square stock sized to the bolt you are trying to remove with a left hand (counterclockwise) twist, you drill a small hole, tap this into the hole and turn it out with a tap handle or crescent wrench if space permits. The old left hand drill bit in a slow speed cordless drill works well too, but I would try the slot cutting and flat blade screwdriver mentioned earlier first

"Any hardware store will have bolt extractors, "
In the US usually sold by the brand name "E-Z Out".

Any auto parts store, Sears tools, I'd even use the disposable ones from Harbor Freight for a plastic part like this.

This might be the ticket - but you'll need to get the right size;

How about two drywall screws on opposites sides of the plastic plug .Then place a loonie between the protruding heads and twist.Probably enough time has gone by that you've solved the issue anyway.

I got my dipstick out of my 3ym30.

Here is what I did to do it.

I used a utility knife to cut a slot into the leftover part in the casing. Then I wedged the knife in there at an angle and was able to back it out about 1 turn (carefully). Then a good ol' pair of needlenose to grab the nub that was backed out and backed out the rest.

I tried using the extractor bit but it just rounded because its plastic. Wouldn't stay set in there.
