I'm not sure I'm following you Casey. I have a V-drive on a Volvo but it's a little different than most installations but I'm familiar with other V-drives. Normally you loosen the coupling (and hopefully it was coated with Neverseize when it was installed) and the shaft goes out through the stuffing box and stern tube if there is enough room for it to clear the rudder. Sometimes the rudder will need to be removed. The other option is to remove the trans/V-drive and pull the shaft into the boat (after removing the prop of course, makes it difficult if you don't :-)) In either case you'll need to be on the hard (it's amazing how much water can come through a relatively small hole). My setup has a short driveshaft off the trans. to a separate V-drive, so I just remove the drive and pull the shaft into the boat rather than removing the rudder.
