Bukh Diesel
 

I'm looking for information on the Bukh diesel engine typically installed in the CS33. Not sure of the model name/number. Specifically, wondering about owner experiences, reliability, availability of parts in the U.S., repair costs, and any specific liabilities of this engine.

Is this an engine that is on par with Yanmar and Westerbeke? A cut above or below? Comparing apples and oranges?

An internet search does bring up a lot of hits on the Bukh. Much more common in Europe. Appears to be a very reliable engine. Parts are available in the United States. Mechanics do not know this engine so you will probably have to do your own work. Repair manuals are very well written.

I think in North America parts cost may be an issue.. a friend had a single cylinder Bukh in a Laser 28 - it always ran OK until the (RWC) water jacket in the head corroded through. He was out over 3K before it was fixed with new parts.

FWC would have fewer issues...

Our old girl had a Bukh DV24, 20 years old and still going strong. Fabulous donk, along with Yanmar I believe they are the only marine diesels that are not simply marinised motor vehicle.

As for parts in the US for some reason I had the feeling that Bukh is sold in the US but not under the Bukh name. Bukh parts are expensive I do readily admit.

From what I can gather the standard engine in the CS33 was A Bukh DV20. Manuals for the DV20 can be found online.

Reliable engines - used for lifeboats!

I had a boat with the smaller single cyl. DV 8/10 with a sail drive. I really liked the engine itself. I found the engine to reliable and easy to work on. The down side was that parts were wildly expensive compared to Yanmar for example and that out of stock parts took forever to get even if they were normal maintenance items, and that there were relatively few sources in the US for replacements parts.

Mine had a saildrive which meant you were stuck buying a Gori Prop. I would never buy a boat that required a Gori prop again. Gori is the worst!

A solid motor, but be wary of Scandanavian spare parts prices.
Be very wary.

Indeed they are but mate of ours recently needed parts for his Bukh and ordered them directly from Bukh in Sweden rather than through local (Oz) dealer. Saved himself some serious currency.
