Westerbeke Parts

Does anyone know the best (read: most economical) parts source for Westerbeke? Mine is a 30B3.
I have a leak in the oil pan (rusted thru at the drain plug) and a search indicated over $350 for the pan + $330 for the gasket! I am sure I can find cheaper but still effective gaskets.

Can't help but I can commiserate, Westerbeke prices are obscene. I needed a double groove pulley for the alternator and it was $540, single groove one was $70.

One possible route is to find out what block the engine was marinised from. It may be that you can find the oil pan at a tractor dealer or somewhere similar. My Westerbeke (W58) is the same as one of the Perkins and is also a Mitsubishi tractor engine. Unfortunately these tractors do not seem to have been sold in North America although they were common in England, but you need lots of time for shipping from there at reasonable cost. Worth the research time.

Lots of Westerbekes are marinized Mitsubishi industrial engines. Find the Mitsubishi model number on your block and look it up on-line.

Here's a hint. If you tell a Mitsubishi distributor you have a Westerbeke they will NOT help you. Westerbeke has an OEM deal with Mitsubishi that Mitsu and their dealers will not sell parts for Westerbeke's.

I figured out my model number, an SL4-2, and Mitsu serial number, which is well hidden under the red paint, and then ordered the Mitsu parts manual. Parts are about 1/4 the price though I have not needed many...

Can you give a bit more information on the location of where you found the block number? I've been all over my Westerbeast 33 and have yet to find anything.

I've googled, looked all over the block, and searched the Mitsubishi website and cannot find a standard tractor engine for the 30bthree (what I have too). If you find one, please let me know.

For the gasket, couldn't you just use RTV silicone (Permatex)?

The closest I found and it matches on looks and numbers is the L3E. And I believe this engine is also used on a Vetus engine.

I will confirm once I find the number on the block.

Just got back from the boat... it is the L3E block.

Mitsubishi - L3E - Water-cooled - In-line - Diesel - ASTM no. 2-D - Gear pump - Electric starting | DET Mitsubishi

Way to go Funjohnson! and thank you too MaineSail (again)!!

I had a feeling that the L3E looked too much like my engine.

I am going to the boat tomorrow, and just for the record I will snap a pic if I can squeeze into the right place. Now the challenge is to find a Mitsu part source without mentioning Westerbeke as MaineSail hinted. I will search and keep you posted.
