Starter problem

Nearly each time I want to start the engine

Sounds like your solenoid isnt engaging the starter ... on the first try. Sticking solenoid!

Many times all thats needed is a simple cleaning out of rust and other accumulated debris from the operating rod of the solenoid. At the same time its good to do a voltage drop test of the 'entire' starter primary circuit ... the circuit that controls the 'solenoid'. When you turn the key and push the start button you 'should' have close to 'battery voltage' AT the solenoid ... much less then you should clean up all the corroded wiring and connectors between the key switch and the solenoid.
While your at it testing the voltage drops, check the 'continuity' of the primary windings of the solenoid .... should also be close to 'battery voltage' to verify that there isnt a 'short' in the primary coil winding developing - rare.

Many times a sequential repetitive on/off - on/off -on/off with the 'push button' and quick enough (just 'tapping' the starter pushbutton a few times) without the starter fully engaging will 'clear' up a sticking solenoid.

..but if this doesn't clear it up pretty-much straight away, don't keep doing it - you'll burn out the end-plate contacts and need a whole new solenoid.

In fact you'll probably need a new solenoid anyway. Don't ask me how I know this..

The actual noise you're hearing is the bendix gear not fully extending therefore not properly engaging the flywheel (because the solenoid mentioned above isn't traveling fully). Without the load of the engine the starter motor spins very rapidly, so the gear will chatter against the flywheel teeth doing neither of them any favours.

Fixing this sooner rather than later will prevent undue wear on those parts.

I agree with Faster it is the Bendix drive. If you are taking out the starter to R & R the solenoid, clean the shaft the Bendix gear rides on,as I have seen them gunk up and slow down the gear. If you can do the solenoid without taking out the starter, never mind!
