I do that a few times a year. Each time I swear I'll check next time. The funny thing is that my engine will start in gear (unless it's real cold) and then I wonder why it starts moving!

Rockter,
Consider yourself lucky it didn't start. Believe me, when a diesel kicks in while in gear and at 1500rpms it is not exactly soothing to the nerves. Scared the shite out of me, I can tell you.
Of course it wasn't MY fault .... why on earth would you think that ?

If you wonder why your normally-reliable diesel engine is slow to start, try making sure that it's not in gear.
Mine was.
Was standing dockside watching an inexperienced boat-broker do this. The perkins 4.108 started right up on the Formosa 41 and I only knew it was in gear from the sudden prop-wash. All I could think was "Wow, now THAT's a good starter motor!"

I had to sail in to the loading dock once because my outboard engine decided to not start. Must have pulled the starting line 3 dozen times. Noticed it was in gear while loading the boat.
