I agree with the aircraft approach. That's why I love gauges and staring at them. The desire for something other than gauges is because I'll sleep better on the off watch knowing that there is an alarm to awaken the attention of others at my helm.

I can see the arguments against a shutoff, especially a false alarm/shutoff which I hadn't considered.

I like the flow meter idea, as it would give more warning. I think I'll also install audible alarms and educate all helms-people that the audible alarm means shut down and awaken me. A placard perhaps?

It also seems that the logistics of actually shutting down a diesel would be difficult to do automatically....

Rockter will become famous soon enough
Be very careful with fitting too many gauge and instrument systems. On a long crossing a single, prolonged gale will soak everything, everywhere, and the 12V corrosion potential will corrode connections so fast you will not believe you are witnessing it. The classic symptom is that your multimeter shows a slight voltage drop, close to, but slightly below battery voltage. I you try to draw a load through it, it chokes off the current. It is deceiving at times.

Please keep it simple.

You need a depth sounder, you need an oil pressure alarm.

You don't truly need anything else, although they are nice to have. A bilge alarm is useful.

Certainly fit the others if you wish, but get ready for them to drop out in heavy weather, and bring lots of WD40 with you.
