Universal 5411 or M15
I'm a bit confused when It comes to the Universal engine in my 1984 N-28 II. The original survey 10 years ago had the engine listed as a 5411. The dip stick is labeled Z-500 and its antifreeze cooled so its my understanding the engine is a M15 (16 HP, 45 in^3) not the 5411 (11 hp, 31 in^3). Are there other ways to tell the difference. (still cant up load pictures)

Re: Universal 5411 or M15
5416 was the universal 16 hp engine Donald. I have one in my boat. it was the Z-750 kubota engine used in the kubota L-185 tractor
The Z500 seems to be this. Engine: Type: Kubota Z500-1A Fuel: diesel Aspiration: natural Cylinders: 2 Valves: -unknown- Bore/Stroke: 2.625x2.75 inches [67 x 70 mm] Displacement: 31 ci [0.5 L] Power: 12 hp [8.9 kW] Cooling: liquid Coolant: 3.2 qts [3.0 L] Compression: -unknown- Rated RPMs: 3000 Starter volts: 12 Starter power: 1.1 hp [0.8 kW] Oil capacity: 2.4 qts [2.3 L] |
Re: Universal 5411 or M15
The 5411 and M15 are essentially the same engine based on the Kubota Z-500 industrial engine. The 5411 became the M15 at the end of its production run. If yours is fresh water cooled, not raw water cooled, i.e it has a heat exchanger, it was probably converted at some point.

Re: Universal 5411 or M15
This Universal Engine History is the web site I was referring to in my original post. It says "In 1977 the Model 5411 was introduced. It was a 31 cu in, 2 cylinder raw water cooled diesel producing 11 hp @ ? rpm, based on the Kubota Z-500 block, and fitted with a Hurth HBW-50 marine transmission." and "In 1982 the Model 5411 was replaced by the Model M15, a 45 cu in, 16 hp, 2 cylinder, fresh-water-cooled, based on the Kubota Z-500 block and fitted with a Hurth HBW-50 marine transmission." Is this web site in error?

History of the Universal Motor Company 4 The Kubota engine number your engine is based on should be stamped on the oil dipstick. The 5411/M15 is a Kubota Z-500. |
Re: Universal 5411 or M15
Thanks Jim, I almost forgot why I cared, then I remembered I was considering replacing the old three engine mounts but I needed to know the proper engine weight which leads me back to which engine I have. Thanks again.
