repairing diesel engine on the dry

Hello Everyone

I am planning on doing some work on my diesel engine this winter.

I was initially planning to put the boat in dry dock and then work on it.

It has since occured to me that it would be trickier to test run the engine when there is no water supply to cool it.

how is this issue usually handled?

Do you just attach a bucket to the intake and outlet and let it circulate?

It seems that water would get hot pretty fast.

Also I am not sure the water pump can actually suck on the intake side so the bucket would have to be on the outside of the boat right by the intake?

any suggestions are welcome.

Stick a plastic bucket or bin in the cockpit. Run a hose from the bucket to the motor intake. Put a garden hose from a spigot to the bucket to keep the bucket full while running the motor. Any excess water from the garden hose will spill out and run out the cockpit drains.

Why not just stick a hose into the raw water intake?

That would work, but it might be difficult to regulate the water flow and the pressure with spillage ending up in the bilge.

Hooking up a hose with shore side water pressure directly to the raw water intake is asking for trouble. The worst case scenario is you end up with water back flooding your manifold and into your cylinders - not good.
It is best to let the water pump regulate the amount of water and pull it in from a bucket as already mentioned.

West marine sells a plunger head fitted with a hose bib for just this purpose...works well...regulate water pressure with faucet ...

I got an old large plastic bucket - the size industrial floor cleaner comes in. I bought a plastic thru-hull fitting the same size as my raw water intake and installed it on teh side of the bucket near the bottom of the bucket.

I take the raw water intake hose off of the water strainer and add a four foot length and attach that to my bucket thru-hull.

I start filling the bucket with a garden hose. I could run the motor as long as I like with this set up. DON'T put it in gear - your cutless bearing needs water for lubrication.

I use this each fall with potable antifreeze to winterize the engine and each May to start and test run the motor before launch.

There are at least a half dozen guys in the boat yard that "borrow" it each fall and spring.
