Yanmar 1 banger on a new old boat...need advice

Guys,

I'm a newbie at this, so bear with me here.

I picked up an 82 Hunter 27 with the yanmar inboard a few weeks ago, that's in dry dock getting the love an attention she needs.

I just heard from the mechanic, who's highly reputable; and he said the Cutlass bearing is pretty much gone, the "stuffing box" needs to be repacked, the shaft needs to be rezinced; and the motor is out of alignment with the shaft. loose guess was somewhere between $1000.00 and $2000.00 in repairs, and he'll get me a better estimate this evening.

Here's my questions: 1: Is all of this "critical" to do this year, knowing I'll probably put 25 or so hours on the motor this Summer 2: What, if anything, can be left off and 3: IS IT WORTH IT?? It seems like for about $2500.00, I could mount a 4 stroke outboard off the stern.

Thoughts?

That's the stuff you do yourself, not that hard, lots of books out there. I have a YSM 8 in mine neat motor,whats your's?.....Dale

If you're having the yard do the work,and buying a good used outboard, then you likely can't hang an outboard on the back for under $2500.
Replacing a cutlass bearing , installing a zinc, repacking the stuffing box and realigning the engine are all things you can AND SHOULD do yourself, with the help of a shop manual. The materials aren't expensive, the job isn't hard to do, but it is labour intensive./ You should do it yourself ebcause the more you know how to do, and the better you know your boat, the more capable you will be when the poop hits the paddles out there.

Besides, the more money you hand a yard the less money you have to upgrade your boat, or buy your next boat.... or for beer.

It does all need to be done, but the estimate seems a little high if it was a plain R&R kind of repair.
If the shaft is scored or not true it may need replacing at about $350, alignment is normally included with the stuffing box/shaft repairs. However if the misalignment is caused by broken motor mounts that's an expensive repair.
Shaft zincs are a $20 item normally, your gonna need more detail on what he intends to replace/repair.
I just looked at some records and in 2006 I had a 27' boat hauled, painted, relauched and all the repairs mentioned (and a little more) for $1900 by my yard. Shaft was in good shape, cutlass bearing was only part replaced.
BTW I've seen boats that have been "aligned" using wooden wedges, etc. where motor mounts are shot, you really need to take a good look at what things look like.

I'll look into doing the work myself, factoring in my available time...

is the Cutlass bearing the only thing that it has to be out of the water for? If so, I can always get her back into the Marina and do the rest myself in the slip.

( To be frank, i put "stuffing box" in the same category as "changing blinker fluid"; glad to see that it's a real thing!

Two winters ago we replaced our shaft, cutless bearing, shaft log hose and refurbished our old stuffing box. We paid less than $1K for materials all in. We did all the work ourselves except for making the new shaft and having our old coupling "fit & faced".
