stalling at idle

Volvo MD2040c stalls at idle speed 1000 rpm when left there a few minutes.
Starts normally, runs at normal cruising speeds but when I come in to dock, need to idle to reduce speed, need to shift to reverse etc the engine stalls.

I have changed the primary and secondary fuel filters, had my fuel polished and the tank cleaned. There was a lot of sediment. This did not fix it.

Any suggestions for a next step? I searched Nigel Calders book but did not see this as one of the things on the troubleshooting chart.

Insufficient fuel. You hit the first culprit, so if you're sure the filters are not clogged, are the injectors dirty? Maybe as simple as the throttle pulling back too far? Possible, but uncommon, a failing fuel pump.

Are you getting any kind of smoke when running at high rpms, even at the dock in neutral?

thanks for the reply, I do get some smoke idling at the dock. It is greyish.

The feed pump (near the secondary filter) has been recently replaced.

I was also thinking the next step was to have the injectors cleaned. Is there any way to tell if the fuel pump is failing? That seems like its going to be an expensive part.

Would the engine run well over 1500 rpm if the fuel pump was failing?

Uh oh. Now I'm worried about whether you have a combustion or valve issue. Grey/blue ish smoke is usually oil. If your rings are worn, they may be seating better at higher rpm and pressures and not holding enough compression when idle. It would be starting okay, because the cylinders haven't expanded from heat yet.

Fingers crossed. Have the compression checked. Its fast and simple.

just to follow up, I checked thru all the fuel lines and bleed points, bottom line was fuel showed up everywhere except at the injectors...I have pulled the injector pump, taken it to a shop where they found some blockage and removed it (quite a relief since this only cost $125 and a new pump is over $1500...gotta love Volvo spares)

in the next few days I will reinstall the pump and if I bleed it correctly I am hoping it will start right up and will not have the stalling problems

I will keep you posted
