Diesel Mechanic needed in Marathon - urgent

Our inboard Volvo Motor broke down - we got a tow to the City Marina in Marathon. The Marathon Boatyard Marina workers won't come to the boat to check on the motor. Is there any diesel mechanic out here in the area who would come out to the boat (on a mooring ball) and check the motor?

(We used all our "towing credit" with Boat US to get here. We are live aboards on vacation and on a tight budget....We might have to wait for weeks for parts if needed and $90/day just for the wet slip fee at the Boatyard Marina is just not affordable for us..)

You can call me under 954-257-8101 if you know any diesel mechanic who works on Volvo engines here.

Thanks!!!!

Heidi

Heidi,
Give a description of what the diesel is doing or did before it died. It might be a simple fix that someone here can walk you through.

Thanks for your prompt response!

Motor made "weird" rattling metallic sound - like something is hitting something inside. We put motor in neutral and than it shut off but itself.

My husbands thinks it's something major inside the motor....

He is going to open up the motor and have a look at it...

Ruh-roh....

That sounds ominous. I really hope it turns out to be a minor issue.

If you haven't yet, raise your problem on tomorrow morning's VHF Cruiser's Net session. Chances are good that someone in the harbor can give you a good suggestion or two about a suitable mechanic.

You might also check the bulletin boards in the library section of the lounge.

Metallic rattling sounds usually mean something has come loose and either looking inside (with a borescope) or opening the engine comes next. I don't know about mechanics there for you, but do note that you can check out the United Parcel web site (Shipping, Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Management from UPS) to check out the delivery times. UPS ground, which is often the cheapest way to ship things, also often has a thousand-mile "overnight" delivery time. So waiting weeks for parts should not be necessary unless they are coming from Sweden!
There are plenty of charter operations in the Keys. You might want to walk the docks when they are coming in or going out, and ask for a couple of referrals. If you get the same name from three different boats, odds are that's a good mechanic. (Or one who hasn't been convicted yet.)

THANKS!
We will be on the VHF tomorrow morning. Will check the bulletin board and also put up a "help wanted" sign. My husband will start working on it himself tomorrow - start taking the engine apart... Wish us luck

Friends of us had to wait for month for a part...sometimes you don't know if the marina's let you wait for it on purpose...Easy money for them - letting you pay the dockage fee for weeks, saying it takes weeks to get the part...And they won't tell you exactly which part you need....or it has to be shipped from Sweden...

Anyway...My husband will open up the engine and see what he can find out...

Thanks for the tip walking the docks to get referrals!

Heidi,

Look at it this way -- there are worse (much worse) places to have to wait than Boot Key Harbor. We got to stay there for a long while waiting for our autopilot course computer to come back from Raymarine.

Best wishes.

Re: Diesel Mechanic needed in Marathon - urgent

Getting services away from the dock is hard in most places. You don't have to drop many tools in the water before you start thinking taking a customer dinghy out to a boat isn't the best idea ever.

Nevertheless, some of us learn slowly and continue to serve those anchored out or on moorings.

The VHF net is a good bet.

Metal on metal sounds are generally not good. Best of luck.

That's absolutely right! We got lucky - braking down after the shallows of Hawk channel - weather was great - small anker was holding - and Boot Key Harbor is a great location and the people are very helpful!

We found somebody here who looked at the motor after my husband took it apart. If we are lucky, it's only something with the fuel injectors. There was no sound when he turned the engine "by hand"... Let's hope for the best.
