Temperature gauge install

New to a Universal 5411 and a Catalina 27. Concerned with over heating the engine. The instrument panel does not have temperature gauge and don't believe a sensor for the engine. What is the process to install the needed equipment. More concerned with the engine piece sensor and placement. I can handle the wiring to the instrument panel. Panel does not have space, but I would remove the fuel tank gauge. Sailing on a lake with a 15 gallon diesel tank not too concerned with running out of fuel. Would appreciate any help

Re: Temperature gauge install

I had a 5411 on my previous boat. Had a temp gauge but no alarm! You can buy a generic gauge and sender from Defender, West Marine or many other suppliers. The sender needs to be installed in the cooling water loop, probably using a tee. Note there is one electrical connection on the sender, the circuit is completed through the ground. Thus the sender body must be grounded.

Catalina Direct have (very expensive!) kit to add a temperature switch and alarm.

Re: Temperature gauge install

Thanks to All,

Returned this weekend to the marina. I do have a temp gauge. I replaced the thermostat.
Engine never got above 150 degrees. Therefore, no exhaust water. Checked all the hoses, impeller and mixing-T all clear. Is that normal to have no exhaust water under 150 degrees?
