Angry Engine turns but won't start

Hi,

Can anyone advise what to do / check next ??

Have a very old Ford Mermaid Meteor engine that has been running ok until I left it to go on holiday for a week and now it just won't fire / start.
Last time I used it there were no starting issues.

Now, I'm not very mechanically minded but have done the following.
1 - Checked the fuel - plenty of that !
2 - Replaced the fuel filter
3 - Bled the system - there's fuel coming out at the injectors.
4 - Temporarily removed the solenoid cut off at the fuel pump to see if that was stopping fuel.
5 - Glow plugs are ok.
5 - Tried using Aerostart ( yes I know it's not good for engines) but not even a cough or splutter !

What next???

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
BW

Assuming that you have compression.... If there is a compression release, I would verify that it is closed.

It isn't bled until you have removed all the air from the fuel lines. Fuel at the injectors is the first step.

Re: Engine turns but won't start

I'm not familiar with that particular motor, but I have experience with diesel engines in general. They need air, fuel and compression to run. Fuel is usually the problem and it sounds like you have that pretty well covered. I'd look at air next by temporarily undoing the exhaust hose off the exhaust manifold to see if the manifold is clear at the water mixing elbow. Sometimes the mixing elbow becomes so plugged up that the engine just can't breath and performance is hindered. If that's clear, I'd pop the injectors and then squirt some motor oil into each cylinder. Sometimes if an old tired motor sits for a long time, they lose some compression because of cylinder lubricant sliding past the rings. If that gets your motor started it indicates a very tired motor.

Thanks for that folks - don't have a compression tester but will try some oil into the cylinders as suggested and see what happens.

Probably wouldn't do any harm to bleed everything again - and then again either!

Re: Engine turns but won't start

Look for a bleeder screw on the secondary fuel filter and a bleeder screw on the injector pump housing. I tried to take a shortcut and just bleed at the injectors one time on my motor and it would not go until the injector pump housing was bled. Good luck

Had a similar problem years ago with our Yanmar YSM8R --no compression due to a piece of carbon under exhaust valve, found this when head removed

Re: Engine turns but won't start

Careful not to use too much oil in cylinders. It doesn't compress very well. I use a spray bottle with a bit of gasoline down the air intake If it won't keep running with continued squirts, it's too tired to be trusted.
