Yanmar 3JH3E RPM gauge intermittent

The RPM gauge on my Yanmar 3JH3E is intermittent. It sometimes works for
15 to 30 mins when the engine is first started. Any guesses as to if it's the gauge
or the sensor.

The sensor is almost impossible for me to reach so I'm reluctant to replace it but
I'm guessing that the first thing to try.
