1987 Westerbeke W10: PROBLEMS: HELP!!!

FIRST PROBLEM: When I attempt to start the motor, I can tell the starter will spin but it will not engage the flywheel. All the connections are tight and the batteries are fully charged.

SECOND PROBLEM: Below the engine I have recently started to notice large amounts of oil that have leaked out of the engine. There are no noticeable places I can actually see where the oil is coming from though. If anyone has had a similar problem please let me know what the diagnosis turned out to be.

Thanks for ya'lls help

First Problem: Bendix Spring
Solution - remove starter, and take to a local auto-electric shop...Should cost < $100 to fix

Second problem... clean it up best you can, lay down paper towels or oil matting, run the engine and see where it's dripping from. If it's a rear seal, oil hitting the flywheel may get flung around a bit, but if it's a leaky pan or other static leak you should be able to locate it - don't wait too long, just get the oil pressure up and the engine warm, dig out some earplugs, a flashlight and a mechanic's mirror and investigate.

Re: 1987 Westerbeke W10: PROBLEMS: HELP!!!

Thanks for the help guys. I removed the starter and tested it on a battery, it spins but doesn't extend out. So I will bring it to a auto electric shop to have the bendix spring replaced, like you said. And it is a static oil leak, do you know where I could get a replacement oil pan?
