That's sounds great, but I'd suggest it as somewhat un-professional to brashly toss out a number for a difficult job you likely don't understand (ever pull a W33 from a CS 36T...ever been on a CS 36T?). So some of the kids may be impressed but I am not.

Repowering a CS 36T

am I missing something?

whats worth 6k to install?

a boom, chain pulleys and a standard new mounts, shaft alignment, prop change etc...

if you or anybody think 6k is REASONABLE for an install then well I congratulate you

My Perkins 4.108 definitely needed 12-15 seconds of glow if it was cold.

cb in ri.... we dont have em on ours here...is unnecesary ..mine is a quick start, when it ran..lol before it sed ka lunk...but it doesnt freeze here...ever.

and may is reinstall ka lunk month... want pix of how a lady installs an engine????

It is my understanding that WD40 no longer has a flammable propellant and should not be used. In cold weather I hang a heat gun from the ladder and direct the heat towards the glow plugs and air intake, but not too close. Four or five minutes and 15 seconds on the glow plugs I have a quick start. 1981 Catalina 27.

Thought I'd post a follow up to this thread, as today I got some answers.

We ended up buying the boat, of course, and moved aboard a couple weeks ago. I put maybe 10 or so hrs on the engine over the summer, but it wasn't until we were aboard full time that I had the time to really look into this starting issue. The engine started blowing some black smoke, even when fully warm, in addition to requiring lots of cranking. On the advice of a local diesel mechanic, I pulled the injectors and found one to be wet w/fuel, all were pretty coked up. I took them in to be tested, and low and behold, they were ALL leaking, spurting, and generally in bad shape. The previous owner, who rebuilt the engine, claimed the injectors "have been rebuilt", though he didn't specify when. I suppose it's possible that they became fouled from a couple years of disuse...In any case, with rebuilt injectors installed today, the engine starts and runs perfectly, with zero smoke.

To anyone in the future, I would be very wary indeed about going near any motor that needs ether to start it.
The motor will get addicted to it very quickly, if it isn't already.
The ether will be detonating on the compression stroke as the piston rises and will pound the heck out of the piston crowns and the rings.
The owner must demonstrate to you that the engine starts reliably without narcotics.
Please don't touch it if it doesn't.
It will be nothing but trouble, and the trouble will worsen.
