Am I screwed?

I have a 2qm20 and am changing the oil for the first time, and did the transmission oil first.


The manual calls for a bunch of different automatic transmission oils, a lot with ATF in the name. Since a lot of them are no longer available, I bought ATF from chevron. After dumping it in the transmission, I see its not actually oil, but automatic transmission fluid.

So, am I screwed? Or will it work? Or should I try to suck it all out again?

On further investigation the transmission is a KBW10 which according to this DOES take ATF.TRANSMISSION TYPES

So I may be OK. I think the fact it was this purple fluid and not oil totally threw me

close call. ATF eats normal seals. 5 wt oil is possible substitute. If it calls for ATF
give it ATF.

It calls for gear oil though in the manual, I think ATF is the synthetic version of that and should be fine?

Most transmissions take 10w 40 or heavier. If i remember correctly some of the old construction equipment took 90W. Gear oil is not ATF. Check the manuel or manufacturer.

Yeah, it 100% calls for ATF oil in the manual, see here




I think the thing that threw me is that it talks about 'oil' while recommending ATF (which is a fluid, which I didn't realise until I poured it in and had a panic). This is my first diesel engine so it's all new to me still

It appears the PO just used ordinary oil as well - maybe that's why the gear change was a lil rough

Ok, I figured it out. I'm good.

First I found this post

Yanmar 3GMD transmission oil confusion in manuals - which lead to Sailboat Supplies, Engine Parts and Boat Parts

According to that, I need to use Dexron II/III in the transmission.

Then I went to http://www.t20host.com/cvx/lubelink/...ltiVeh_ATF.pdf and https://cglapps.chevron.com/msdspds/...&docFormat=PDF and according to these two links, Chevron ATF is approved for engines that call for Dexron II/III.

So I'm all good. Man, that took a bunch of googling... hope those links help others with the same issue.

It is a poor translation. If you read it carefully, the OIL belongs in the crankcase, meaning the engine. And the transmission, which they call the "clutch", gets the ATF. Which is Automatic Transmission Fluid among other names. But never called "oil" in America.

Some transmissions take ATF, others take engine oil. Some "clutches" are actually clutch hydraulic cylinders, which typically take engine oil.

Not a bad ttranslation, just not a great one.
