Looking for a Yanmar 2GMF starter motor

Hi All...

My Yanmar 2GMF starter motor has seen better days, and its time to replace it. The local places want about $350 for the motor with solenoid, which is pretty pricy. I did some looking and found an aftermarket for about $80, but it has poor reviews.

So, can anyone recommend an affordable starter that works well and won't break the bank?

Thanks!

Try a local repair shop that specializes in Starter and Alternator repair. I wouldn't be the least bit afraid of a proper rebuild usually in the $80-120 range. I don't know how big your town is but you shouldn't have to look to far.

I did think to have it rebuilt, but that of course involves down time and also, the case is pretty rusty. There are some soft spots. I actually would like to have the entire engine services, but that of course means removing it, which is non-trivial to say the least!

Remember a clean Motor is a happy Motor, I just scrapped my cleaned up and painted all the spots where the factory paint had fallen off. It runs better now of course and its easier to spot leaks and such.

I was thinking of doing this. Was the engine in the boat when you did it? What kind of paint did you use? What application method? Did you cover any parts? Thanks.

Re: Looking for a Yanmar 2GMF starter motor

Engine in, on my CS30 I have unparalleled engine access with a removable fiberglass cover. I just scraped and wire brushed all I could get to, put some light grease on the model tags and after that there isn't much that doesn't get paint. I threw and old bed sheet under and to cover the floor. I used Volvo engine paint, or any auto parts store has a good selection of hi temp paints to choose from
