MD11C Gauges

I'm in the middle of replacing my gauges for a MD11C Volvo Penta on my Pearson 323. It appears all the senders are in working order. I'm replacing the tach with a Tiny Tach and I'll install a generic voltmeter. Those are easy.

Where I'm running into a problem is replacing the oil pressure gauge and temperature gauge. Currently I know their senders work. I've Googled everything I can think of to find out how to find a compatible gauge but I can't find anything. I realize I might need a new sender and gauge but I still donít know where to begin.

Any help would be appreciated. I have googled and googled including (site:Diesel - SailNet Community).

Re: MD11C Gauges

The senders must be matched to the gauges if you expect the gauges to read correctly.

Re: MD11C Gauges

While it's true that gauges and senders must match, if you're not worried about cosmetically matching the existing gauges, you can easily buy senders/gauges from any number of automotive or marine suppliers. There's nothing special about them except that they must have the right threads for the engine ports and the right temperature/pressure ranges. I just bought 4 complete sets of gauges for Yanmar engines from Defender for about $70 each with senders. About 2 years ago, I bought a complete oil pressure set made by Faze for $35.

Re: MD11C Gauges

This might help:

http://faria-instruments.com/site_manuals/IS0085E.pdf

We recently used Faria gauges on a power boat we refit that had a Yanmar. We did need to change the temperature sender to match the gauge, we were OK on oil pressure.

I assume volvo would use the european resistance values, but I don't know for sure.

Re: MD11C Gauges

Awesome. I was thinking it had to be more engine specific. I'll worry about matching threads and go from there.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: MD11C Gauges

Yes most engine manufacturers use industry standard instrumentation. As was noted, there are differences between European and US practice. I do know there is a big difference in the fuel tank level senders, but am not sure about the oil pressure and water temperature units. Worst case is you have to change those senders.
