1980 Universal M-35 parts availability?

Heading to look at a boat early next week. It has a Universal M-35.
Am I looking at a repower or are parts for these old beasts still able to be found?

No shortage of parts and fairly reasonable prices: Parts for Universal M-35

Hey,

That engine is based on a Kubota diesel tractor engine (I believe). Many parts are available from the Kubota dealers at MUCH lower cost than from a boat place. For example, I needed to change the thermostat on my M25 engine. It was $10 from the kubota dealer and $50 from Marine Diesel Direct. You can get glow plugs, starters, fresh water pumps (not raw water pumps) and lots other parts from the tractor guy.

It's a Kubota tractor engine. Google equivalent parts and save $$.

Good luck on the boat.

The parts that do tend to be expensive are the ones that are peculiar to the marine version - raw water pump, heat exchanger, and especially the exhaust manifold, which is currently available for $1700 online. At least it's available - they are not for my Universal 5424. This is not intended to put you off buying it, but rather to encourage you to inspect these parts carefully.

Thanks guys. Remember delivering a couple of boats with these in the 80s and never had a problem with em. Just didn't know if they were still part worthy.

That exhaust manifold will get some extra attention on Monday. Thanks!

Bleemus,
Pull the dipstick. On most Universals the equivalent Kubota engine number is stamped on the dipstick. That's the number you need for ordering parts from the local Kubota dealer.

And if it needs motor mounts, forget the stock Universal mounts, go with the Vetus mounts, one size up from the mounts recommended in their size chart (based on engine weight) and she'll purr like a kitten. There's more on mounts on the Catalina 34 site.

Mark, you'd have to check the bolt pattern but you can probably use the exhaust manifold from the 35B at $725.

If the boat you're looking at is a Catalina check the joint where the exhaust hose connects to the water lift muffler. This is a common point of failure on older boats if the stock hose hasn't been replaced with an offset "hump" hose.

Also if the boat is 20+ years old check the rear corners of the oil pan for rust through. Depending on how the engine is mounted in the boat replacing the pan may require lifting the engine clear of the beds.

Partially true. It is rare for an exhaust manifold to break. I haven't heard of one in 17 years.

The raw water pump should be an Oberdorfer, not a crappy Sherwood, and are available at Depco Pump Company for a reasonable price.

HXs can be found from Seakamp in Seatlle. $250.

All of this is covered in my last link.
