Volvo Penta MD2020 Question

Hi,

I have a 2003 C & C 99 with a Volvo Penta MD2020 w/ Saildrive. The engine is a bit hard to start when cold. With new batteries, I need to crank for approx 10 sec's, three to four times before she'll start. Is this normal? At start up, she'll cough up a fair amount of black smoke. Once running, there are no issues and a warm re-start is just a turn of the key. The engine has less than 300 hours on it. Any suggestions?

not sure if this will help you but I have a very old Universal. She was very slow to start last year but I believe it was lugging her too much at low rpm and the valves gummed up with carbon. I took her out for a long run at higher than usual rpm and it has been fine since. I also topped up the fuel as I suspected it could also have been related to some fouled diesel. Black smoke tells me it could be one of these two things. (it could also be 25 other things but this is a cheap fix!)

Does the start switch have a glow plug heat setting on it? are you using it?
90% of all marine D's will have to have a pre heat of some type. either you heat the air or the head but it will have one or the other.

Thanks for the replies. I've not seen a glow plug heat setting anywhere but will check the owners manual when I get down there this weekend.

It may be as simple as just a key on. The temp switch may turn it on as well. if you can post a pic of the top side this may help to further you along.
