I've got a sail drive seal leaking around the prop shaft and i need the oil seal with the spring around it... any ideas on who or where i could get parts for a BUKH sail drive... thanks
I do not belive Bukh makes their own saildrive, it is probably a ZF or Selva unit. You will need to identify what you have, look for a manufacturers plate or identifying marks on the upper part of the drive (the part inside the boat).
I'm not absolutely sure that Bukh manufacture the sail drive themselves but they do have engines, from 24-48hp, sold under the Bukh name which are saildrive.
Nope, she is a one lunger 8hp and pushes a 36' 10500lb boat at 5.5knts... without the saildrive it would take a 16hp to get the same result... whats really cool is i can easily wrap the lawn mower cord around it, give it a pull and she fires up, without a battery... i think i used 5 gallons of fuel last summer.......
I have an 8hp Bukh saildrive in my boat. There were original equipment in Laser 28's and a few other 80's boats. The model# is DV8SME. I suspect yours is the same. These are good, simple engines but parts availability is tough. You don't say where you are, but there are to my knowledge two North American distributors for Bukh parts. North Jersey Marine in New Jersey and Crinmar in Ontario. Crinmar is DefaultHomePage. North Jersey Marine doesn't have a website (actually there is another North Jersey Marine that sells bass boats, don't be fooled). I've posted contact info below from an email the owner sent out to customers last year. In the past I have been able to get good advice from him regarding engine problems. However, I've been waiting for a parts order from him since late January and found it impossible to get him by email or phone. It's a little hit or miss.
Your third option is to order parts from Denmark (where Bukh is still in business). See: LSM Diesel A/S - Denmark - Marine Motor Sale, Spares and Repair. This is a Danish Bukh distributor with an online parts catalogue with pricing for some parts. I suspect shipping will be expensive, I haven't tried this route yet, but may soon.
Coincidentally, the part I'm replacing is the saildrive bearing and seal. You may be able to replace the seal without pulling the bearing, not sure. In my case the bearing was shot (corroded). I had to split the case to remove the bearing. Bukh parts are outrageously expensive. Think of the most you figure the part could cost and multiply by four. Good luck!

I understand (from reading the forums) that you have an Abbott 36?
Which hull number and what name? I'm on the West Coast of Canada and have Abbott 36 hull #3, named Krikkit (formerly Windspeed).
The 36ers are relatively rare boats -- only about 13 built according to Bill Abbott Jr. I have a list of about 9 or so that I've tracked down.
Funnily enough, my last boat, a Contessa 26, had an 8-hp Bukh (not saildrive though), but Krikkit has been repowered with an 18 horsepower Yanmar 2GMF and Yanmar saildrive. It'll happily cruise under power at 6.5 to 7 knots.
Anyway, I'd be interested in comparing notes, getting you and your boat on "the list," and maybe getting some keel measurements from you next time you are hauled out (my boat has a non-standard keel, and I'd like to know exactly how much it differs from standard). I'd have PM'd you, but apparently I don't have sufficient posts for the Sailnet system to allow this.
Hey Simon
Welcome to Sailnet.. you'll need 5 posts before you can PM anyone (exc mods) but that's easy enough to do. Always good to see another BCer on the board, especially one from the FCHA!
You may be better off removing the seal and take it to an industrial bearing supply shop. There is usually a number on the seal that they can use to find one that will fit. Also, if you remove the seal and take the part in they can mic the diameter. I recently went through this will the raw water pump on my Yanmar. The pump seals were leaking. I took the pump to the shop and they found the correct replacement seals for about $6. A new pump was in excess of $600.
I've got a DV8-SME in my Tanzer 26. It's been a great motor. Had to do a partial rebuild last year. I had no problems getting the parts I needed from Crinmar in Kingston. He's knowledgeable and had all the parts except a piston (mine was badly scuffed) on hand. Even with ordering a new piston from Denmark, had all the parts in hand in under 2 weeks.
Hi, I personnally get my BUKH parts from:
