When you get the manual, you will also find that the studs/bolts used to attach the head may or may not be reused--do not reuse them unless the manual say to, because some bolts are designed to distort when torqued down, and be thrown out after one use.
Your friend has a torque wrench of course, so he also knows that the cylinder head bolts need to be REtorqued, typically a month or so after the head was installed. The manual will have a more specific figure based on hours of operation.
The job isn't brain surgery--but there are many small mistakes that can be made which will easily ruin it. Pretty much any shop manual (see your local library) will at least cover most of the procedures, they're all substantially similar.
