Unhappy Help! Volvo Penta Md5b?!?!?!?!

Ok, I have blead the fuel lines, its getting fuel, I found the fuel kill lever and its open. There seems to be good compression?!?(havent compression tested it yet),took out the injector and cleaned it(it looked pretty dirty, but not horrible), Intake is sucking air like it should. The motor just cranks and cranks but doesnt start. Ive event tried the old wd40 in the intake trick, still nothing. Ive gotten some black smoke once and it seemed like it was trying but didnt start. Im at a loss guys. Did I miss something? The motor sat for probably 3 or 4 years, so maybe bad fuel?!? I added about 3 gal of fresh diesel to the tank and the tank cant be more than about 8- 10 gal. and was only about 1/4 full when I started. could the fuel be the problem or is there anything else to look for? Im ok with rebuilding it if I need to, but i dont want to yank the motor to find it was something simple to fix. Any help will be appreciated greatly! thanks for your thoughts! What do you mean you cleaned the injector? That is pretty much a job for a diesel shop. They test it to see the spray pattern and rebuild as needed.

You can bypass your fuel tank and just run your fuel hose into a jug with clean diesel.

Exhaust could be plugged. Does water pump out of the exhaust while you are spinning it over? Then probably ok.

Keep at it. I suspect you will get it figured out.

I had a diesel mechanic(heavy equipment not marine) look at the engine and with his expertise we pulled the injector (which is actually a simple mechanism) and just cleaned it with some carb spray and made sure that the injector was free of obstructions. like i said it was kinda dirty but not too bad. ive eliminated bad fuel from the equation, but still cant get this thing going. we have only to check the fuel injector pump and thats pretty much it. We are at a complete loss of what might be wrong, uless it is just too tired and too little compression to get it going. Just seems to have enough compression, but what do we know, still havent done a compression test on it yet. (dont have the tool). still confused!! getting closet to yanking it every time i work on it!

It really sounds like a fuel problem, i.e. injector, lift pump, injection pump, etc. I would continue checking that system before resorting to pulling the engine. The injector can be removed from the engine and the spray observed by cranking the engine, but that must be done VERY carefully as the high pressure spray can drive fuel into the skin and your blood stream. You say you've tried spraying WD-40 with no luck. Best approach with that is to spray the WD-40 into the engine while the engine is being cranked so the spray is drawn in with the air. You can also try a SHORT shot of engine starting spray, but be VERY careful. Too much and you can damage the engine.
