Spare Parts for Diesel
I have an old (~1980) single cylinder A30 Farymann engine in my sailboat. We cruise the inside passage of BC in the late Spring (I.E. June ... it's Canada, eh?) and Fall when/where there tend to be few boats around. Although my engine is in pretty good shape, I have had a few minor problems (fuel line failure, starter, belts, water pump) ... fortunately to date I've had the parts and tools on hand to get back underway.
The fuel line problem opened my eyes a bit as I had a hard time finding the parts I needed (luckily it happened in my slip while I was trying to fix the leak). I know I'm on borrowed time but I'd like to borrow as much time as I can with this engine before facing the repowering costs.
My question is what spares should I have on hand for this vintage of diesel engine that I don't already have? What I carry with me now are spare belts, filters, flexible fuel and water lines and clamps . What I don't have (that comes to mind) is a spare starter, alternator/regulator, fuel pump, injector, lift pump. I'm reasonably good with electrical systems and gas engines but diesel is new to me ... so there are certainly things that will just be out of range of my skills to repair, especially in the "wild".
Any advice is appreciated. I'm trying to round up and hoard any spares that might make sense.
I don't think many of us carry spare starters or many pumps per se... certainly spare parts for any pumps you may have so that an in the 'wild' rebuild is possible. I'd also research and keep on hand contact info for any suppliers you may need to tap (that list does little good sitting at home). With cell phone coverage improving all the time, it's possible to have parts delivered (though possibly pricey - but so is a tow) if you can track them down to a source.
If you're comfortable with gas engines, then diesels are so much simpler that you should have no trouble.. got air? got fuel? got compression? - you're good to go. Generic parts like fuel lines and such should be no problem getting hold of.. and the external parts like heat exchanger bundles, RW pumps and the like are not necessarily engine-brand specific .
Sounds like you're as well set up as most already, if not better...
