ATF is much thinner than any grade of engine oil. If you use ATF I would expect that the various bearing and wear surfaces are more subject to damage and premature failure. If ATF was required and you used engine oil, I suspect that the oil might not flow to all of the places with tight clearances and also cause premature wear.

"paint - nice thick stuff that seems to fill in engraved info nicely" Some automotive brake cleaner should clean that paint out very quickly. Or, some gel stripper left on for a while, following with a wire brush or "acid" brush (stiff plastic).

IIRC the 3H and 3G series use different transmissions so the same fluid might kill one or both. Dexron has been obsoleted, I think they are up to Dexron-IV by now. But using the wrong type of ATF fluid can ruin a transmission or the seals in it, so you'd want to make Real Damn Sure before adding anything to it.

Asking again

Does anyone have a source for a definitive answer on the tranny oil (engine oil or Dexron)?

I think one of your previous posts says the tranny name plate says 20/30. This would be the weight of diesel engine oil. You DO NOT want to put in ATF oil into your transmission.

The yanmar manuals have many errors when calling out the transmission oil. I have a 3gmd also but with the v-drive Kansaki transmission. I used the same 40 weight oil in both the transmision and engine just to make life easy. The yanmar manuals are correct for engine oil but for transmission- follow the name plate data.

Asking again?
Previous posts?

Come on, guys. This thread has been dead for nearly four years and wrapper has no previous posts in it.

You want a definitive answer? Ask Yanmar, and specify what transmission you're talking about.

Yanmar America Corporation

101 International Parkway
Adairsville, GA 30103
P 770.877.9894
F 770.877.9009

Or use the "Questions?" button on YANMAR | Yanmar North America

They're not so hard to contact. And they are, by definition, the sole definitive source of information on their products.

Re: Yanmar 3GMD transmission oil confusion in manuals

Here is a good link that tells what oil for what transmission:
http://www.sailnet.com/forums/diesel...-new-post.html

I see where a KBW10D can be mated to a Yanmar 3GMD and the trans calls for Dexron II/III ATF 24 ounces- so you need to see if you have a KBW 10D transmission.

(Note the # after oil type is volume in ounces)

Re: Yanmar 3GMD transmission oil confusion in manuals

Sounds like you rub the fluid on your finger, and if it is red, use Dexron III. If it is brown, use SAE30(ND).

Unless you've got one of the SD models, in which case, you'll be going shopping.

Or did I miss another option?

Gear oil: I thought that was the SD series, using the same 75W90 range that many auto differentials and some manual transmissions use. I've seen SAE30 in Honda, 75W90 from Toyota, I'm sure there are others. But the vast majority of the non-ATF on your list are SAE30.
