Daf 575 engine 'Hunting"

I have a DAF 575 diesel engine in my boat. Another boat owner told me my engine was "Hunting" as he sailed away. The engine has done about 4000 hrs and never misses a beat.
Is "Hunting" worth doing anything about? Thanks for your interest. J

I think hunting refers to a motor that has an oscillating rpm. That is that it speeds up, the governor kicks in to slow it down, it slows down too much, the governor kicks in to speed it up. Does your motor do that?

It only seems to happen at very low (almost idling ) revs. I hadnt noticed it being a problem until the comment was made by this other boater.

If it only does it while idling, I probably wouldn't worry about it. You might try adjusting the idle speed up or down a tad, to see if you can find an RPM near idle speed where it doesn't lope. I don't know enough about that particular motor to give any other advice.

Re: Daf 575 engine 'Hunting"

Might be a bit of a late reply, but hunting by this engine at low rpm/idle/cold is perfectly normal. And not worth adjusting.
Many older engines have this issue, and if you do adjust this you might sacrifice responsiveness in some other area of the rpm band.

Hope this helps

M.
