Temperamental Westerbeke Four-91: fuel filter assembly and near runaway status
 
If anyone has any experience with temperamental Westerbeke engines, namely the late '70's Four-91, we could use some help.

1. We broke the secondary fuel filter assembly and order a new one. Turns out Westerbeke superseded the part with a slightly different fuel filter assembly. The head has the same arrows and ports, but the labeling is backwards and the fuel filter is different. We aren't sure what to do about this and we are wondering if anyone has run into this problem. For reference, the part we are referring to is the Westerbeke 19509 which has superseded Westerbeke 14777 that was originally on the engine.

2. Even with the screwy fuel filters, we did manage to get the engine running. Now the major problem is that it starts at a high idle (around 2,000 rpms) and then quickly, very quickly, ramps up to its max. We can stop it with the fuel cutoff, but each time we restart it ramps up quicker. We aren't sure if this has anything to do with the new fuel filter setup, but we did have the older filter assembly off for a week and had to do some major bleeding and cranking to get the engine started.

Help/advice is greatly needed as the snow line is dropping down towards sea level every day and we need to finish winterizing.

I have a w30 but has the old filte.Do have the manuel on bow to bleed.marc

Maybe your throttle cable or linkage is binding? Perhaps disconnect everything and see if the problem still exists. If so, probably something wrong with the high pressure pump / governor assembly. Sounds kind of scary, even though you can shut off the fuel you might see if there is any way to block off the air intake. Did the engine run properly before this? Any recent work done on it? Let us know what you find.

Hi, don't have the manual with me but do this:

Open the union nut on the right closest side of the fuel filter. Pump until diesel doesn't have bubbles is dripping out. Close that union nut. Next, open the blank bolt on the front left side and repeat process. Next, open the big nut on the bottom of the governor and repeat. Next, there are 2 nuts on the top of the governor that are attached together...repeat for this. Finally, open 2 fuel injector pipe union nuts and crank engine with stop lever in run position until fuel drips from pipes with no bubbles. Close the union nuts and start engine. Sorry I don't have the manual...but hope this helps.
