Volvo Penta 2003 Trans oil?

Does anyone know what is the proper oil to use in the transmission? The engine uses 15/40 wt. Do I use that in the transmission also. The manuals I've seen online really don't address it.

Any help is very appreciated!

Brian

The earlier model Volvo MD17 C has 80W/90 gear oil in the gearbox.

It may be the same.

Yikes. Get the service manual for your transmission/reversing gear! You are right that the operating manuals don't do a good job with this. My Volvo TAMD31S-MS25L takes Dextron II/III. This is not something you want to get wrong.

Thanks guys. I'll figure it out. Going down in 3 weeks to get the boat and sail her home. Va. to Ma. I'll confirm then the trans. model and get the right stuff before leaving. A sniff test will tell me if its dextron vs oil.

Cheers,
Brian

You might also want to refer to Volvo Penta Service Bulletins. Service Bulletin Group 44-1 Number 85 Version 2 changed the recommendation for oil quality in S-drives from ATF to SAE 15W-40.

I've got a VP2003 in our boat, and can confirm that the MS2 gearbox takes the same oil as the engine.

I had the engine overhauled a couple of years ago, and the engineer (who knew all there is of the VP2000 series) said that it does take 15W-40 lub oil.

While on the subject of the gearbox, you may want to read this about the splines.

Here is another link to different drives oil.
