VolvoPenta 2002 issues

As a new sailor and boat owner, docking has been the most anxious thing yet. Elite 32 with Volvo 2002 direct drive has been stalling when transitioning from forward and reverse; will always happen without fail during manuvering for docking.....not a good time or place for this. Any help in fixing this is appreciated; i have a good mechanical background, however am new to vovlo penta nomeclature.

Thank you all,

Dave

Maybe the idle speed is set too low? If it has a tach you could check it against the owner/shop manual. You might try disconnecting the control cables and test it at the dock. Does it run OK at speed under load?

Download all the manuals you need from here

I have the 2003 in our boat, and I would say, as the previous reply, that it is your idle speed that needs increasing.

The owners manual give idle speed as 850rpm, with max output revs at 3200rpm. Check it with a/your tacho.

Re: VolvoPenta 2002 issues

Thank you for the replies !!!

I have not been able to get to boat since last post, however; the engine seems to run fine in all other operation except for transition from forward to reverse or vise versa. There is a slight vibration though; i have not checked alignment yet. In regard to idle; i am going to assume that is to set in nuetral, yes? I am begining to wondering about engine control cable hystersis; when i set the idle higher when last at boat, it was not the same when cycled through range.

Thanks you for all the help :-)

Re: VolvoPenta 2002 issues

Suggest you warm up the engine, disconnect the cables and set the idle to whatever is specified in the manual with the gearbox in neutral. Re-connect the cables and cycle through forward, neutral, and reverse. If there is any change in RPM the cable tension may need to be adjusted or the cable may need to be lubed.
