How do I remove engine control?

The two-lever engine control is ripping out of the cockpit wall. How do I disassemble it so I can repair the fiberglass?

There's an exterior assembly (left pic) connected to an interior assembly with its two bell cranks (right pic) via a hub. I need to separate the two assemblies.

The outermost chromed ring on the exterior--with two flats that look like they can be held with a basin spanner--connects to the disk-shaped bell crank on the interior, to which the throttle cable is connected. Does it unscrew? Or is there some kind of circlip that I cannot see?

1986 Catalina 25 w/Universal M-12 diesel. There are no markings on the control itself to indicate manufacturer.

Given the flats, have you tried threading the top one off? I'm sure it originally installed from the inside out, with the hand accepting 'rings' being installed on the outside once the unit was mounted behind... Also can you look on the underside of those chrome covers for a screw access hole?

Someone big step on the levers? or what??

That looks much the same as my single lever control, an older style Morse. I found that there was an allen screw accessed through a small hole on the bottom of the trim rings, though a hole that looks just like the top hole where the arm drops into the ring. At first I thought the unit was just reversible, and that both holes were the same snap fitting for the handle, but found that only one hole held the arm, and the other hid the lock screw. After that was released, the rings unscrewed, I think. In my case, the looseness was corrected by just tightening the internal parts, just as done on original installation. I didn't have fibeerglass damage, and the back portion was securely held. Everything you can see from the cockpit was just coming loose (like it was worn out and coming apart). After pricing new units, i was veryglad to find such an easy fix.

Looks like the same controls for my Universal 20hp. Should be a set-screw on the bottom
on the two outside "rings".

Go to the back of the control and remove the center piece ( for the throttle cable) on the center shaft. Then push the throttle arm through the control into the cockpit.

There WAS an Allen screw in there---a 5/32, by the way---that I just couldn't see. Hubs came off the splined inner shafts easily, once the Allen screws came out.

Next step will be to cut away the aluminum flange that holds the control body out into the cockpit. It's very, very corroded and has fused to the threaded ring that holds it to the yellow body. No amount of PB Blaster has worked, so out comes the Dremel.

Looks like you are making real progress. Just be sure to keep the price of a new one in mind while you are using the Dremmel (carefully). Would it help if you drilled out the screws that are holding the flange to body and then pried? In any case, I would be embarrased to say how long it took me to find that allen screw, but someone on this board pointed me to it eventually.

Turns out that the tubular body of the control is pushed through the center hole of an aluminum flange that is, in turn, bolted to the fiberglass side wall of the cockpit.

Over 25 years, the aluminum corroded, and grew. It pulled the bolts right through the fiberglass. Think of a tree trunk breaking a concrete sidewalk. (If you look at the very first pic in this thread, the stuff that looks like expanded puff pastry originally was solid.)

Glad a I ran across this thread. The control detents, need to be reset or something, you can never tell if the shifter is actually in nuetral, and the throttle doesn't really have a limit on it. Was thinking about replacing the whole thing. The cost is pretty high for a new one, but can't find an exact replacement.

Anyone know what the manufacture of this unit is? I have a westerbeke diesel in a cape dory.
