Volvo Penta 2003

I changed out the Racor Filter on the engine and when I tried to bleed the fuel lines using the lever on the fuel pump I never got any fuel to come out of the vent bolt on the secondry filter. Finally I gave up and tried starting the engine-successfully. Which one is the correct blled bolt? The one with the fuel lines attached of the one in front of it?

Volvo Penta 2003

I have the same (or similar) engine, Volvo Penta 2003t, on my boat. The bleed bolt is the one one on the top of the secondary filter that's closer to the front. Be careful not to over-tighten it, they break easily.

Not sure how your engine is equipped, but the oil cooler on mine just failed due to salt water corrosion. If you know of a source of used spare parts, please pass on the contact info. Volvo wants $1,800 for a new one. I just rebuilt my engine and have many other spares , if you're interested.

If you fill the new filter w/ fuel (or injector fluid as was once recommended) you should be able to screw the filter assembly on and start w/o having to bleed. Least I was!

Keep pumping...

Fill the secondary filter with fuel before you install it and pump... It takes a while. The vent bolt is the highest above filter..

Turn the engine over a using the starter or by hand once or twice. The pump could have been sitting at the bottom of the its stroke and will not pump using the leaver.
