Noisy exhaust - silencer ageing?

I've noticed the exhaust on my Universal 5424 is quite loud. So here's my question : has anyone else noticed a tendency for the silencer (black cannister in front of the engine) to lose efficiency over the years? I'd expect a car one to have lost a lot, but have no idea about the lifetime of marine ones.

Thanks in advance!

Often an unusually noisy exhaust is an indication of reduced cooling water flow..... unless the 'noise' is below and not at the exhaust port. In that case, though, there should be exhaust odor below too, if, for example, the mixing elbow is rotting out.

Check your water pump, screen and thruhull is open. Do not run engine too long or you'll create major damage.
