Re: Yanmar Transmission Clutch Problem

Yanmar say NOT to leave it in gear if you have a fixed prop. It causes the gears to turn without lubrication.

Re: Yanmar Transmission Clutch Problem

How would the gears be turning? Engine is not turning, prop is not turning, gears are not turning.
On my boat, sailing in gear, the prop does not turn the engine against compression.

I'm telling you what the service bulletin says. Leave it in gear at your own peril. I hope that you have your BoatUS membership paid up!

Re: Yanmar Transmission Clutch Problem

Do you have a link to that service bulletin? I would like to see if that would apply to my boat/ engine.

Re: Yanmar Transmission Clutch Problem

Mine will turn if left in forward but not if left in reverse. Left it in reverse for several Pacific crossings, no problems.

Re: Yanmar Transmission Clutch Problem

If you leave the transmission in reverse such that the gears cannot turn, how on earth does that wear the transmission??????

I cannot imagine anyone wanting the transmission to spin when you are sailing with motor stopped.

It is just needless wear.
