Using 'ether' to start a small diesel has its risks as if the 'combustion' occurs at the exact timing of FULL up or 'dead center' piston stroke while the engine is a 'starter turn over speeds' ... you can bend/break a piston rod. because of the dynamics and inertia of the crankshaft isn't enough to move the piston 'through' the 'end stroke'.
Put a 'hair dryer' or 'electric heat gun' into the air intake is a better way to start and with less 'risk'; the HEAT applied will be more consistent with the requirements of 'starting up' the 'diesel cycle' ... VERY different from the "Otto cycle" of gasoline engines. The diesel cycle MUST develop the proper amount of HEAT at full (top) compression of the piston for the oil to 'fire', the heat gun will allow easier 'firing' because it adds to 'heating up' of the fuel done by the compression.

BTW ... dont open the raw water valve until AFTER the engine has fully started when 'hard starting' is expected.

Advance throttle-use Heet if needed-Forget propane-open flame on a boat
is a bad idea. 5-10 sec start up is normal.

@arf145 : Yes , typically in summer we can get the engine started with full throttle and cranking for about 5 secs or less, and then throttle back to idle quickly. However as the temps have cooled even with full throttle its taking longer and longer to start. Hence the HEET spray question. Before this Yanmar 3GM30F I had a Westerbeke 20B with glow plugs, and that thing started fine after 10 secs of glow plug button no matter what the ambient temps. Unfortunately it seems the Yanmar has no glow plugs.

If Heet is ether, be careful. I used to use ether in my 3-71 Detroit diesel, worked fine. However, I have read that using ether in pre combustion chamber engines can be hazardous to their health. Some years ago I used a very small shot of ether in my VW diesel, which was a pre chamber engine, as my battery was slowly dying in 15 degree below zero weather. It fired right up with no apparent damage, but I am not necessarily recommending you do that.

I have also read about spraying some WD 40 in the intake, maybe not so volatile as ether?

As a victim of (3) bent rods in our 3GM30F..the first question from Mack Boring(East Coast Yanmar distributor) was did I use any form of quick start fluid methods such as those previously mentioned in this thread... Bottom line don't do it.. Follow Yanmar's Owners manual for cold start procedures for you particular model.

A direct , but painful, answer to an earlier question. I had "heard" that before I used a very small whiff of ether near the air intake on my VW diesel mentioned earlier. Perhaps the paper air filter blocked most of it? it did start, however in 15 degree below on a battery that was quickly dying. It appears I was very lucky not to have damage as you did. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't do it again.
