Universal M-18 won't start

Universal M-18. I changed the fuel filters, fore and aft, bled the lines of air from the air bleed nut at the top of the aft fuel filter, closed the air bleed nut. The engine started for a few seconds then died. I bled the lines again until fuel came out again, but the engine will not start.
Any ideas?

Yes... but let me go and push it harder and try again.

Re: Universal M-18 won't start

I pulled it out a little and pushed it back in securely... no start.

You might have to bleed it all the way to the injectors.

Re: Universal M-18 won't start

(I seem not have posted this reply earlier?)
I opened the air-bleed nut near the air intake, only fuel came out, no air. I reopened the air-bleed nut on top of the filter, only fuel came out, no air.
It's very frustrating....

Re: Universal M-18 won't start

Well this is a classic problem with many angles. For one thing, I would highly recommend one of the Nigel Calder books on diesel engines as he covers starting one like yours. As you probably know, diesels are beautiful in that only fuel and air in the right ratio are required for them to run. Air is not usually the issue!

Some things that come to mind:
I take it your starter is fine, and that you have a charger on the batteries to make multiple attempts. I hope you have your water intake valve closed during these attempts so you do not fill your exhaust system with water and flood your cylinders, but don't turn it too long and fry your impeller.

Bleeding is the obvious suspect, but it sounds like you are working that one. Incredibly devious problem, that one. One tip I haven't tried that Calder recommends is spraying a continuous stream of WD40 into the air intake while turning the engine over. Evidently a diesel will start and run on WD40 long enough to get some warmth in the cylinder and fuel flowing.

Bleeding is so particular to a boat and engine, it is hard to advise. But it's incredible how little air is needed to keep a diesel from running happily. Read Calder, and good luck!

Re: Universal M-18 won't start

Thank you all for your advice! I discovered that the kill lever thingy in the control panel was not returning the lever on the engine to the fully forward position when it was pushed in all the way. Pulling the lever on the engine all the way forward solved the problem.
Much obliged!!

Great news Jimmy. Isn't it always the simple stuff that causes most headaches! If I had a penny for how many times I've cursed myself for something like this...

Re: Universal M-18 won't start

C27 newbie and this is the first time I've had to do diesel maintenance. I have located the larger fuel and oil filters, but can't find the smaller fuel filter. Where does it go? I got the c27 m18 maintenance kit from Catalina Direct, which includes impeller, 2 large oil filters, 2 large fuel filters and 1 small fuel filter.

I was told that to avoid fuel filter bleeding, pre-fill the large fuel filter with diesel. Do others do this as well?

Also, I want to replace one of the batteries. Any recommendations?

Thank you in advance.
