Topping Off Fuel for Winter

Someone at the docks indicated that there are two types of diesel at the pumps, recreational (read: what you get at the marina) and non-recreational (read: automotive). He said the only difference is the dyes and that recreational isn't taxed. I am worried about additives that might not mix well with the current fuel in the tanks or that aren't made to hang out in marine environments/engines. Is it OK to find
gas station and pump whatever diesel they have into cans for topping off?

Re: Topping Off Fuel for Winter

Some marinas sell ValvTect marine fuel, which has stabilizers and biocides already added. (so we're told). Both are pretty important if you're leaving fuel in the tank over the winter.

Otherwise, I've never heard that road fuel would be bad for a marine motor. It is just taxed differently, which is the primary reason for the color difference. Most buy diesel conditioner and biocides to add anyway, so I don't think it matters to your motor, if you do too.

On the other hand, I've always felt that paying a few more bucks for fuel at the marina is helping keep docks, water, power, parking lots, launch ramps, etc around for us. They don't just exist.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Re: Topping Off Fuel for Winter

Road fuel and off road fuel come from the same tank farm. Off road gets dyed red. The ValveTect additives are added by the distributor. It is all the same fuel one is taxed one is not and dyed red but they both originate from the same batches & tanks.. ValveTect dealers have stringent test that must be conducted at every fill up. Samples are taken and analyzed in order for them to keep the franchise.

Beyond that all marine engines start life as industrial, truck or tractor engines designed to run, what else, diesel.... Diesel is diesel.. Despite off road not being taxed it is still often more expensive than road diesel...

That said, I drain my tank in the winter...
