Re: Yanmar 1 banger on a new old boat...need advice
If you're having the yard do the work, and buying a good used outboard, then you likely can't hang an outboard on the back for under $2500.
Replacing a cutlass bearing , installing a zinc, repacking the stuffing box and realigning the engine are all things you can AND SHOULD do yourself, with the help of a shop manual. The materials aren't expensive, the job isn't hard to do, but it is labour intensive./ You should do it yourself ebcause the more you know how to do, and the better you know your boat, the more capable you will be when the poop hits the paddles out there.
Besides, the more money you hand a yard the less money you have to upgrade your boat, or buy your next boat.... or for beer.
