Yanmar 3g starting

The last diesel engine i operated was on a Bradley platform. So this little tractor engine on a sailboat is a different beast.
I started the engine for the first time today and all went well. I just had it serviced by a pro who assures me all is well. But i want to be sure im doing this right.
There seamed to be a bit more smoke then i anticipated and it does not shut off with the key it just keeps on running. I finally pulled what i had at first thought was a choke and the motor stopped running. so was that a decompression type thing? and how much should this engine smoke? Oh the motor is about 22 years old.
Also it did not really smoke that much just more then i thought it would.Oh and on the control panel for the engine there is a toggle switch that has three positions. bottom, center and a top momentary. Nothing seamed to happen regardless of where it was. The lettering has either worn off the panel or in some cases the writing is in french. Anything will be helpful, Thanks

What you pulled was the fuel shut off. You need to stop the engine before turning off the key or you can fry the alternator.

The toggle switch is for a backlight, I think

Here is the panel from my Yanmar 3GM30

This the toggle switch you talking about? It turns on the panel back lighting for the guages. I believe that switch is powered when the nav lights are on.

The toggle switch on my 3GM30F is for checking the alarm lights. The high temp light in particular since it doesn't light before start up like the low voltage and low oil pressure lights do.
