wiring solar almost got it figured out but need a little help

Hi I'm going to be adding solar panels this week I have drawn up the diagram but I'm stuck on a few things.

Could I get a little help with the last few connections.

I also am adding an inverter, I think what I need is a transfer switch.

Does what I have planned so far make sense?

thanks
Bob

Hey Sno - not to be impolite, but no, that diagram doesn't make sense. Adding solar and a charge controller is complicated enough that if you don't have the right knowledge and experience you could end up creating a situation that could hurt or kill someone and likely burn up your boat.

You're likely to be able to get some good basic input from the folks on this forum, but I would highly recommend that you get a qualified local marine electrician to help with this installation. Maybe there's a local solar systems installer you could work with?

I agree that your diagram is difficult to follow. I suspect the question you are asking is related to the shore power and inverter. If you want the inverter to supply the same AC outlets as the shore power, then you do indeed need a transfer switch. You never want the inverter and shore power connected together at the same time. Alternative is just have different outlets for the shore power and the inverter output.

Do a simpler diagram, just dealing with getting the panels & controller charging the batteries.

Add the inverter as a separate process afterwards

Re: wiring solar almost got it figured out but need a little help

I'm not as dumb as my drawing make me look!!!
I have wired up my utility trailer with solar and an inverter. No problems.

But moving on to marine solar you have a few more things that need to be wired.
What I'm not sure about is starting battery is a standard lead acid battery and the house batteries are AGM So 2 different peak voltages.
Then there are 2 other charging sources alternator and shore power charger.

I know I could just charge the agm's with the solar system totally separate.
But I know I can't be the first to try to do what I'm trying to do, figured someone could give me a clue at least where to look.

thanks again

I don't see how you expect any charging with no positive from the charge controller. After that, I kinda lost the will to follow all those black lines on the paper. All the negatives should be connected to the negative buss bar and it's the positives that need fusing and connections to their respective circuits.

this is close to what I want to except it uses a VSR and the same kind of battery for starting and house.

I didn't draw the positives because I didn't know the best way to run them.

Thanks Andy
I did see your diagram but the echo charger can't handle different chemistries of batteries.

could solve the problem if I replace starting battery with an AGM.

or could be made a lot easier if I just go with just a house bank and use it to start the engine.

I need to go to the boat, I don't remember which charger I have.

The boat is currently set up with just AGM's just not enough of them I have a starting battery laying around from another boat figured I could save a couple bucks by using it.
