Battery Chargers for Multiple Battery Banks

Pretty worthless these days, IMHO.

Please allow me a minor rant!

Why worthless? Well, let's see. You have other onboard charging sources, perhaps consisting of...

- an alternator
- a solar panel array
- a wind generator

Are these sources all connected in such way to charge, say, three separate battery banks?

Of course not.

If you're going to remain at the dock forever, then just maybe a battery charger with output for three separate battery banks makes sense.

But, if you're ever gonna let those lines go...even for a weekend cruise...then there are better ways.

How?

1. Connect ALL onboard charging sources to the HOUSE battery bank.
2. Use voltage-follower devices like an EchoCharge or a more sophisticated DuoCharge or similar device to maintain the start battery (and, if fitted, any other battery bank).

No fuss, no muss, no need to remember which switch is in which position. It's fully automatic, and will give you more time for those sundowners and plotting courses to the next anchorage, instead of worrying about your batteries.

Truly, for most sailors, a 2-step way to energy happiness :-)

Bill, I agree with you. But is there "One Ring To Rule Them All" yet?

One integrated charge controller, that can see the output from the alternator and solar (MPPT) and wind (dump regulated) and somehow, tell each of those players how to make a symphony? Rather than shutting down two at any given time, or letting them fight it out to control the charging?

Very good question. To my knowledge, there is not. Yet. Sure is a need for one, though :-)

On a similar note, I've been hoping someone would come out with a tuner for HF radios which would simultaneously and harmoniously tune both the antenna AND the RF ground! SGC??? Anybody out there in RF engineering-land???

No, but the Outback Flexmax series of charge controllers can deal with both Solar and Wind input and have the option of a dump relay.... so, you'd simplify your charging setup to just two charge controllers.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
