The problem with leaving batteries on charge over winter is that many solar contolers, and some battery chargers, maintain a voltage that is too high.
Make sure the regulator will drop down to a float voltage. If the voltage is adjustable that is much better, set it on the low side if leaving the batteries with no load for a long period. Adjust this point for temperature.
