KISS wind-generator bearings shot after 2 years ?

It looks like the bearings in my KISS wind-generator need replacement, after only 2+ years. The blades don't spin in the wind. I can spin them a little by hand but there's friction and they don't keep spinning hardly at all after I stop pushing them. At such miniscule RPM I don't think magnetic braking is the problem. Unhooked one of the 3 wires to try to eliminate that as a factor; no change.

Anyone else had such early failure of the bearings ? Is this a common problem ?

Thanks,

Bill Dietrich

Thoroughly check the 'magnetic braking', FIRST. Corrosion/oxidation in the control circuit will mimic 'shot bearings'.

Go to Solar Power for Homes, Boats and RVs (USA Kiss distributor) , look at the FAQ listings for remedy, then if you cant continue the 'troubleshooting', contact them directly. 99% of bearing problems are loose/corroded/broken 'control wire' probs.

Bill, you are in grenada, only 70 or so miles from Dough Billings in Trinidad who makes them. He is a great guy, very helpfull.

Re: KISS wind-generator bearings shot after 2 years ?

I tried disconnecting one of the AC wires from the control switch; no difference. Guess I'll disconnect all three. No corrosion or shorts anywhere I can see; haven't tried to open the body of the generator.

When I spin the blades slowly by hand, RPM is so low that I don't think enough back-EMF is building up to stop the rotation, if the wires were shorted. Am I wrong ?

I had a tough time getting responses from KISS in Trinidad 2 years ago when I was buying. Will try him again now, after trying disconnecting all 3 wires.

Re: KISS wind-generator bearings shot after 2 years ?

Got the generator down off the mast, opened up the front cap, and sure enough, the front bearing is toast. Completely rusted and almost frozen. Oil seal ahead of that doesn't look too good, either. Haven't been able to get generator out of housing to look at the back bearing.

This is after 2 years and 4 months of fairly light use, 20 feet up the mast, on my boat in the Caribbean. Seems like an early failure to me. Not happy.

Fortunately, most of the parts are off the shelf and finding a replacement bearing should be easy.

Re: KISS wind-generator bearings shot after 2 years ?

The bearings were easy to get. The machine-shop charged a fair amount to take the old bearings off and press the new ones on, partly because I couldn't get the guts out of the fiberglass housing, and they had to do it. Back bearing probably didn't need to be replaced, but they did both.

Sent email to KISS about several questions a few weeks back, and still have no response from them. I guess they don't read their email.
