old norcold refrigerator - thermostat issue ?

Norcold Tek II dc254a

Its old but has only 2 years on it, I guess it sat in a warehouse for years.

Problem is that the compressor runs every 2 minutes, then off for 2, on for 2, etc. Its hot in my cabin, Florida hot, but this seems excessive.

I did pull the control knob and it seems to have an integrated thermister on it. 2 connections for the thermostat wires. Resistance value is only 0.5 ohms, and other norcold refer specs say resistance should be around 2000 ohms?

Can't find any specs for this fridge and it confuses me that my reading is not infinity or 0 if the thermister is bad. Is the thing dead ? Can I replace with a newer thermister rather than try to find the whole control knob combo as I'm sure its pricey and hard to find.

Thanks

Does the evaporator get cold at all? try taking the thermistor off of the evap. See if it stops short cycling. The compressor needs to run quite awhile to get the system working at proper pressures and overcharge of refrigerant could be making it go off on overload.
try this link http://www.thetford.com/HOME/CUSTOME...8/Default.aspx

found this on Ebay. the model # of yours is listed on it. So this does does mean there are manuals out there. NORCOLD Refrigerator MOTORHOME RV REPAIR 200+ Manual's | eBay

Thanks Denise. My fridge guy charged the low side to 18 psi with old R12 .. Yes it's old. Said R134 would kill the compressor.

You mentioned an overcharge could cause compressor to overload, can you pls explain this? Maybe he went too high at 18 psi?

Thanks

Only way is to weigh, the proper amount in. It cannot be charged buy gauge pressure it's to critical. Look at the plate, the amount of charge should be listed. Most techs have more refrigerant in the hoses they connect then is needed in these little units. If it has a freezer plate and the spill over cools the larger box. 18 would be way high. but it's hard to know without knowing all the temps at the time it was done. What is nice about R-12, is the temps and pressures are very close to the same.. why so many of us still love it.

Re: old norcold refrigerator - thermostat issue ?

OK good to know. The news just gets better on my end. I had poked a hole in the evaporator - origin of problem - that is how the r12 leaked of course.

Well I have just discovered my repair of the evap gave out. Lime green oil leaked out my patch job. FYI I tried marine tex cured and covered with 5200 for protection. It lasted about 2 months, defrosting seems to mess with the patch job. I was told it would not hold ... it didnt !

So with a bad evap and bad thermostat I'm out. Time for a new fridge. I have an old scqt conversion kit I may try to get working again.

Thanks for the education tho

Re: old norcold refrigerator - thermostat issue ?

there are some heat set patch kits made for ice picked evaporators. I've not had success with them either. Probably a good choice to go with another. Good luck!
