New alternator and DS issue

Here's an odd one for you gurus..

We recently upgraded to a high output alternator, smart reg and ACR. Very happy with it all overall....

But our venerable old Signet LCD depth sounder is acting up. Our previous max voltage due to the old diode isolator was maybe 13.2V.. Now we're up to 14V and if the engine's running the DS reads overrange regardless of depth. Shut down and as soon as the system voltage drops to resting it works fine.

Any ideas?. Thanks.

Re: New alternator and DS issue

What comes around goes around.

Looks like your old depth sounder is voltage oriented and you'll need to adjust it to a known depth. Should be a pot on it.

Or the alt needs to be adjusted down in output voltage. I'm not a expert but I thought alts were set to either 14.1 or 14.3 depending on battery type - for those you can adjust anyway.

Lessons learned are opportunities earned.

Re: New alternator and DS issue

Just to wrap up this issue...

We tried ferrites, IC voltage regulation, mechanical shielding to no avail so...

We bought a new but discontinued Raymarine ST40 depth meter and connected it to the original Signet transducer. It works great, none of the alternator interference that was plaguing the Signet, and on top of that, where the Signet used to top out at around 120 feet, we now read down to 275 so we've gained there too.

Pleasant surprise, avoided changing transducers, and got it at a discount as well... good news all around!

If you suspect it is over voltage related throw a diode in the + feed to the sounder. This will drop the voltage about .6V. If that does not do it throw two in series...

Re: New alternator and DS issue

We tried that too... ultimately I was concerned about too LOW voltage when not charging.. in any event it didn't help. I then used a 3pin IC LM7812 12V regulator, same result.

I'm happy with the situation now..(see post #3 above) better display, better range, didn't have to change transducers.. glad to have 'depth' back when powering! AND efficient charging!!
