Connection strap from meter shunt to negative bus

Somewhere on the web, I saw a photo of an install (probably by Maine Sail) in which the volt/amp meter shunt was installed an inch or so away from the ground bus, and the two were connected a short, rigid jumper of some sort.

I'm reconfiguring my distribution in a similar fashion, and I'm thinking that a strap like this would work much better than a 1 inch battery cable. Could I flatten out a copper water pipe section and drill for the studs? I could use a plumbing torch to tin it with solder if that made a difference.
