Alternating confusion...

I'm trying to figure out how to properly install the new alternator I purchased. It's a Hitachi with internal regulator. I know that one terminal goes to the momentary contact on the key switch to 'excite' the alternator, and the other goes to the warning lamp. Problem is, the boat once had an external regulator and I can't figure out how to rewire the setup to work properly.
The wiring diagrams I've looked up online don't seem to show which contact on the key switch to connect to - they just show the wires going to the key switch.
Do I run the lamp wire to a bulb (warning lamp), and then to the key - but do I run this wire to the 'on' contact for constant power? I can't see it going to the momentary switch, that doesn't make sense.
All help graciously accepted and please - TYPE SLOWLY! I'm not real good at this stuff!
Thanks...
